Smart Solar Benches
Overview
In collaboration with Origin, we embarked on a mission to support the Sydney Swans in decarbonising their operations and enhancing the match day experience for fans with eco-friendly solutions. This case study details our initiatives: the installation of solar-powered benches at ‘Origin’s Home of the Fans’ box at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Objectives
- Decarbonise operations at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

- Support a community, both online and in-person, that promotes and encourages positive actions for the environment.
- Promote the use of renewable energy solutions in everyday activities.
Implementation
In partnership with Origin, we designed and installed solar powered benches at the SCG. These innovative benches allowed supporters to charge their devices using clean, renewable energy during matches. The benches were strategically placed within the ‘Origin’s Home of the Fans’ box, ensuring accessibility and convenience.
Features of the Solar-Powered Benches
Renewable Energy Charging: The benches are equipped with solar panels that harnessed sunlight, converting it into clean energy for charging devices. This feature provided a sustainable energy source and also educated fans on the practical applications of solar power.
Free Wi-Fi hotspots: These innovative benches offer free Wi-Fi. This allows attendees to stay connected throughout the game, share their match-day experiences on social media, and access information seamlessly.
Impact
Sustainability: The solar powered benches represented a tangible step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the Sydney Swans games and the SCG. By utilising renewable energy, the project supported Origin’s commitment to a cleaner energy future.
