Eco Renewable Energy has partnered with Yarra Council to provide and install three new smart solar benches in Yarra, which use 100% renewable energy to provide free wifi and phone charging. The first of their kind in Melbourne’s inner city, these benches will encourage locals and visitors to sit, relax and recharge in nature, using clean energy. ERE is supporting Yarra to provide sustainable technology access to diverse communities. Intelligent urban furniture is becoming an essential part of city infrastructure, as we think ‘smart’ about the design and activation of public spaces. Smart outdoor furniture like these support towards the creation of smart cities. This technology evolves street furniture into multi-function social hubs that work to increase connections between businesses, communities and visitors while raising awareness of the urban impact on climate change through environmental measurement and reporting.

Built-in environmental sensors collect and share real-time data about air quality, temperature and humidity and air pressure, the benches also provide free Wi-Fi hotspots and device charging – all powered by a 100% standalone solar energy system with low maintenance required. Using only energy generated from the sun, these smart solar benches are packed full of benefits for the community, the council and anyone looking to sponsor the free wifi. These Smart benches have been installed in the following locations:

• Atherton Gardens Oval, Napier Street, Fitzroy
• Curtain Square park, Carlton North – Coming Soon
• Stewart Street, Richmond, opposite Corner Hotel
